Cygnet works with people with disabilities in groups to support them into training, education, employment and volunteering. Employability skills are different to the skills you have when you’re in work. When it’s been a while since you applied for a job, you might have lost confidence around putting your cv together or going to an interview.
Our funded work is group based. We find that when people get together with others in a similar situation to themselves they can learn and grow from each other. It makes them feel less alone and that they have value. Often society judges people who are out of work and this can cause people to lose confidence.
When a person meets someone else in this position they are able to see that they have commonality. They can see that other people on benefits are just like them – they’re not all the way people on benefits are often portrayed by the media. They have skills and can contribute to society but something might be getting in the way of them being able to achieve this. Group work is so powerful and Cygnet facilitates groups to enable people to have a voice, express their feelings (if they want to) and their views in a safe place where they are free from judgement.
Employability is a range of skills that help you get into work including mindset and confidence, motivation, planning and putting together a CV, filling in an application form and those interview skills.
Kelly set up Cygnet because she loves supporting people to be the best version of themselves. Kelly had some barriers to getting into work herself in the past. She managed to overcome these barriers but recognises the struggles people have with finding a job they love and where they feel fulfilled and happy.
